What White Room can do
This page lists what the current alpha of White Room does. It names only what the editor offers today.
Library
- Import JPEG and PNG photos, one at a time or as a series. The editor keeps a copy of each original in your browser and skips a photo it already has.
- See the whole series in a grid and make the thumbnails larger or smaller.
- Pick or reject photos with P and X, and rate them from zero to five stars with 0–5. With Shift held, or with Auto Advance on, the next photo opens.
- Filter the series by flag and by rating, and sort it by the time you added photos, by file name or by rating.
- Select several photos with Shift-click and Ctrl-click (Cmd-click on a Mac), or with Select All, Select None and Invert Selection. On a touch screen, Select mode does the same.
Develop
- Basic: Temp and Tint with a white balance selector, Exposure, Contrast, Highlights, Shadows, Whites and Blacks, Texture, Clarity, Dehaze, Vibrance and Saturation, and a switch to black and white.
- Tone Curve: a point curve for RGB and for each color channel.
- Color Mixer: hue, saturation and luminance for eight color ranges, and the gray mix of each range in black and white.
- Color Grading: color wheels for shadows, midtones, highlights and the whole photo, with Blending and Balance.
- Detail: sharpening and noise reduction for luminance and color.
- Crop: crop with a free or locked aspect ratio, rotate in 90° steps and straighten.
- A histogram with clipping warnings, and a Before view that shows the photo without your tone and color changes.
Every change goes into the history of the photo and is saved as you work. Undo and Redo step back and forward.
Export
- Export the active photo or every selected photo as JPEG files.
- Choose the quality, keep the full size or resize by the long edge, the short edge, width and height, megapixels or a percentage, with an option not to enlarge small photos.
- Name files after the original, a custom text, the date or a sequence number.
- Where the browser can write to a folder, as Chrome and Edge do on a computer, the files go to a folder you choose. Elsewhere they go as one ZIP file or as separate downloads, and on a phone to the share sheet too.
Exported files carry no metadata from the original: no camera data and no location.
Your work on this device
- Originals, edits and previews stay in your browser. There is no upload and no account.
- Back Up Edits saves your edits to a file. Restore Edits brings them back, and Locate Original links a photo to its original file again.
- Where the browser allows it, install White Room as an app. After it has loaded once, it opens without a network connection.
Limits of this device
To keep editing smooth, the editor limits how much one device holds. A computer with 8 GB of memory or more can keep 500 photos of up to 128 MB and 25 megapixels each. A computer that reports less memory keeps 200 such photos. A phone or tablet keeps 100 photos of up to 64 MB and 25 megapixels each. In the editor, Help › About shows the limits of the device you use.
